To complicate matters, the desert city of New Norra is steeped in mystery, and the massive maze under the streets could potentially solve all of Volke’s problems. With hunters after him, and dread pirates in the port, Volke finds himself forced to choose between equally terrible options…
The fourth book in the brilliant Frith Chronicles see’s Volke on the search for a cure for the arcane plague. Picking up right where Coliseum Arcanist left off, Volke along with Adelgis and the plague immune Fain, set off in search of Adelgis’ father in the hope that has indeed found a cure for the plague.
Of course, being Volke, nothing is ever simple and despite his ever increasing worry about the time constraints of finding a cure he stops the hunt to help several other people along the way.
There was a lot of action and a lot to learn about some of our protagonists – notably Adelgis and Master Zelfree – the latter shown through the clever use of Adelgis providing Volke with dreams on the journey to help him sleep.
The last part of this book was so action packed it beat out even the end of the book before and I audibly gasped several times.
Having read all four available books in this series literally back-to-back I now feel a little bereft and can’t wait to catch up with the Frith Guild again in their next outing.
