I don’t typically pre-order a lot of books – not because there aren’t a lot of books that I want to read – there definitely are but because I find the payment for pre-orders makes budgeting more difficult. For most books I spot ahead of publication I make a note and by them on or after publication – or sometimes pre-order closer to the release date. Sometimes however a book crops up that I just can’t resist ordering straight away. At the moment I have these beauties waiting to arrive.
Sharpe’s Assassin by Bernard Cornwell
A new Sharpe book! How could I resist this? I read all of the others a number of years ago now and I’m very fond of them. Fingers crossed this one lives up to expectations. No blurb I can find for this one yet but that really doesn’t matter – I need to read this.
Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff
It has been twenty-seven long years since the last sunrise. For nearly three decades, vampires have waged war against humanity; building their eternal empire even as they tear down our own. Now, only a few tiny sparks of light endure in a sea of darkness.
Gabriel de León is a silversaint: a member of a holy brotherhood dedicated to defending realm and church from the creatures of the night. But even the Silver Order couldn’t stem the tide once daylight failed us, and now, only Gabriel remains.
Imprisoned by the very monsters he vowed to destroy, the last silversaint is forced to tell his story. A story of legendary battles and forbidden love, of faith lost and friendships won, of the Wars of the Blood and the Forever King and the quest for humanity’s last remaining hope:
The Holy Grail.
I’ll admit to jumping on the hype a little here. However I do love a good vampire book and I’ve enjoyed other books by Kristoff so I feel this is a good punt. Also managed to snag a lovely Goldsboro copy so feeling pretty pleased with this choice.
Warlord Arcanist by Shami Stovall
As the twelve god-creatures appear in the world, nations brace for a inevitable struggle. Some have allied themselves with the Second Ascension in return for power and protection, but the Frith Guild aims to form a counter alliance.
Volke Savan, along with the other arcanists of the Frith Guild, must not only find a way to end the arcane plague once and for all, but prevent the remaining god-creatures from falling into the hands of their enemies. If the Frith Guild can form an alliance between powerful nations, and defeat the Autarch before he bonds with any god-creatures, perhaps a war can be prevented.
But the dragon arcanists of distant lands have come to challenge Volke and test his worthiness. Despite the ever-mounting pressures, and lack of time, Volke is determined to not only convince the world’s strongest arcanists of his worth, but to also defeat the god-arcanists of the Second Ascension long before the appearance of the dreaded apoch dragon.
A kindle pre order rather than a physical copy for this one – Stovall’s Arcanist series is one of favourites of the last few years and I can’t wait to see where she takes us next.
