The most interesting things in Maud Blyth’s life have happened to her brother Robin, but she’s ready to join any cause, especially if it involves magical secrets that may threaten the whole of the British Isles. Bound for New York on the R.M.S. Lyric, she’s ready for an adventure.
What she actually finds is a dead body, a disrespectful parrot, and a beautiful stranger in Violet Debenham, who is everything—a magician, an actress, a scandal—Maud has been trained to fear and has learned to desire. Surrounded by the open sea and a ship full of loathsome, aristocratic suspects, they must solve a murder and untangle a conspiracy that began generations before them.
This is the second book in The Last Binding trilogy that began with A Marvellous Light. Despite lots of love for A Marvellous Light flying around it somehow managed to sit on my bookshelf for a while which meant I only read it a few months ago (and loved it) so it a real treat to receive an early review of copy of A Restless Truth and read it so close to the first. Of course that means I’ve now got an extra long wait for book three….
A Restless Truth wastes no time getting started, we jump into the story with Maud on a ship on a mission. We only got small glimpses of Maud in A Marvellous Light so it was nice to switch focus to her for this book and get to know who she is when not seen through her brothers eyes.
This trilogy is definitely fantasy with a very interesting magic system that is a delight to get to learn about but A Restless Truth is also a superbly crafted crime caper set on a boat. There is a murder to solve and lost treasure to track down all in the space of the week it will take to arrive in port at the other end of the journey.
Violet was an excellent addition to the cast of characters we already knew and the relationship between herself and Maud was fun to watch build up. I loved Violets theatrics, her boldness and the softer interior she hid beneath a confident shell.
All in this was a brilliant read – and I think I may have enjoyed it even more than A Marvellous Light. I’m definitely going to have an impatient wait for book three! Also another outstanding cover – these will be such a pretty series they deserve to be displayed face out rather than filed in. Amazing work by the cover artist.
With thanks to Black Crow PR and Tor books for sending me a copy in exchange for honest review.
A Restless Truth will publish November 2022 and is available for pre-order now!
