Book Review: The Danger Gang by Tom Fletcher

Franky can’t wait to move to his new town – although he wishes he didn’t have to leave his best friend Dani behind.

But everything changes after the storm, when strange green lightning and powerful thunder crash down on the town. From that night on, the kids who live on Franky’s street start to change. One by one, they become a little odd. A little unusual. A little… magical.

Franky’s always wanted to be part of an amazing gang – just like his hero, super-spy Zack Danger! And soon, he realises that there’s real danger in store for himself and his new friends.

And so the Danger Gang is born..

In the same vein as The Christmasaurus that I reviewed towards the end of last year this is another great Middle Grade book from Tom Fletcher that was hugely enjoyable to read. I think other fantasy readers will enjoy as a quick bit of fun escapism regardless of whether or not you have children!

This has lots the elements that can be used for a standard fantasy novel, magic, self discovery, friendships being forged, a secret society and an evil organisation to be stopped.

The format was clever with Franky writing to Dani monthly to tell her what has been happening so we get to experience it from his viewpoint in hindsight.

Once again Fletcher also did a great job with a diverse cast of characters and touched on aspects that will effect children in real life as well as focussing on the fantastical elements.

The story is well written and very funny – although I was reading it to my oldest for bedtime it was a book I couldn’t wait to get back to so we could read the next bit either!
